Do you like to talk on HF? Do you like to work special event stations and collect the QSL cards? Coming soon will be a very special and unique special event that I think would be awesome to have a QSL card for. World Amateur Radio Day 2015 is fast approaching, April 18, 2015. Nearly 90 years ago on April 18, 1925, the International Amateur Radio Union(IARU) was formed in Paris with the ARRL Co-founder Hiram Percy Maxim, 1AW, as its first president. At its birth, the IARU, had 25 member countries and has since grown to include more than 160 countries. Much like the ARRL, the IARU, fights for the rights of the amateur radio community.
Much like field day is for the US, World Amateur Radio Day is a time where clubs from around the world can come together and show off what amateur radio can to do to the general public. The event will run during the weekend of April 18 & 19th. There willK be several special event stations set up both on HF and on IRLP. To name a few, A43WARD in Oman will run from 0580-1700 UTC, KP4FD in Puerto Rico will run from 0000-2359 UTC AND ON IR, you can join in on the fun through the World Radio Network via the World Conference Server(node 9252) and the Hi-Gate Server(node 9250) from 1600-1730 UTC. With the more than 3 million amateur radio operators world-wide, according to the IARU estimates, I’m sure that anyone that participates won’t have any problems making contacts.
If you or your club is going to participate in this event, the IARU is encouraging you to promote your activities on social medial using the hashtag #WARD2015 on Twitter and Facebook. If you would like to have your World Amateur Radio Day activity listed on the IARU WARD page, contact ARRL Media and Public Relations Manager Sean Kutzki, KX9X.
