Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

Hello everybody and welcome back to Everything Hamradio! With Christmas time approaching at a break neck speed, I find that it is getting harder and harder to find the time and the focus to write a post when I have so much stuff going on with Christmas parties, shopping, and other things so what I am thinking that I am going to do is to hold off on writing any more posts until after the first of the year. I will continue to post news articles but as far as articles that I write myself, I’m going to take a small break from over Christmas. This will also give me some extra time to get a little ahead maybe on articles that will be starting up after the first of the year.

Coming in 2016

Since my Technician Class Series ended last Sunday, I don’t have a series anymore so I’m having to think of something else to do for my Sunday post. So starting in January 2016, I am going to have a themed month of posts on Sundays. I have January and February planned out already but I am still working on the rest. I am going to try and plan out posts for at least the first six months, if not the entire year. If I really feel inspired, I will do it for both posts of the week not just the Sunday post but we will see.

So as it stands right now, January is going to be Digital Radio month. We will talk about DStar, Yaesu System Fusion, Project.25 and Digital Mode Radios and then maybe a pro-vs-con post for the 5th Sunday. In February, well I had originally planned to write about APRS, but as I am writing this, I think I might move that topic to March and continue on the Digital road a little bit longer by talking about digital mode communications like PSK31, RTTY and other things. That would make a good segway into APRS since it is a digital mode too. I guess you will just have to stayed tuned to find out…mwhahaha ::evil laugh:: !!

Another thing that I have been toying with is starting a podcast next year. I have been doing a lot of listening to different podcasts and how to do a podcast and things like that and I think I might make that jump. I’m not sure exactly when I will start it yet though because there is still a few things that I have to get in order to do one. I have recorded a couple versions of the first episode and have listened back to each of them a couple times and I am just not all that satisfied at how I sound. Compared to other podcasts that I listen to, my sound quality SUCKS!! So probably before I launch it, I am going to have to get me a new microphone. On one of the podcasts that I have listened to by John Lee Dumas called Free Podcast Course Podcast, he recommended one of two mics.

The first is a Logitec Clearchat USB microphone like this one:

Or one step up is a Audio-Technica ATR2100-USB Cardioid Dynamic USB/XLR Microphone like this one:

I’m not sure which one that I am going to go with to begin with. On one hand, I’m thinking go with the headset one first to make sure that I make it in the podcast world and then later upgrade to the regular mic. On the other hand, why not invest in myself to begin with and have some better quality sound from the get go. The only draw back with the second mic is that I would have to make sure and sit in a way that my mouth is close to the mic all the time, at least until I could get a boom for it. Of course, with a boom it would have to be pretty much a permanent mounting situation. Unfortunately, we are in the process of moving and that would push back the launch at least a couple months and it probably wouldn’t launch until at least mid February. So I will probably go with just the headset for now.

What are my plans in 2016?

On a more personal note, what do I have planned for 2016? Well, as I said above, I am going to be moving in the first part of 2016. I am hoping to be moved in and living in my new house sometime in late January. If everything goes the way that I hope it does, we have a couple things that we would like to do before we actually move in, but hopefully that wont take but a day or two to finish.

So moving is the first that we have to do next year. Once we get moved, there is a couple things that I am really looking forward to. One is I will actually have a place to set my ham shack back up. As I have said before, my wife and I are foster parents and since we started this part of our lives back in about May or June of 2015, all my amateur radio gear except for my radio in my car and my hand held has been packed up. I also haven’t had a place where I can sit down and get work done either because where my ham shack was, is in the room that is now our daughters room. My wife has a desk in the corner of our kitchen/dining room, but with all the stuff that she does, there isn’t a whole lot of room for me to do my stuff, so most of the time, I am either sitting on the couch on my laptop, or at work, or once a week(actually when I probably get the most work done) sitting in the back room at a local McDonalds while three of our foster daughters have their weekly two hour visit. Another way that this place is going to be awesome for my amateur radio hobby is that our house is going to be right on top of the hill. It is just down the road from one of the highest places in the county and I believe just like 20-30 feet below the it, so with the height at ground level, plus my 60′ tower, I’m going to have a nice range.

Thirdly, the property where we are going to be moving is on her parents 14 acres so we will have A LOT of room to do stuff. Her mom also wants to have some kind of work shop, which is something else that I like to do but haven’t really been able to do. I have a bunch of tools and most of the equipment that we would need to have a workshop, but I don’t have anywhere to put it. She has the space! She has a barn that she bought for her horses, that they don’t use so she said that we could make that into a workshop for both of us. I can’t wait to get it done, I have so many things that I would love to build.

I’m sure that there are going to many other things that are going to change that we don’t know about yet, but those are the three that I am really looking forward to. So let’s see, we have talked about the upcoming blog schedule, the podcast and now stuff on a more personal note, I guess that just about covers what I wanted to cover in this post. So like I said at the beginning of this post, my personally written posts will probably be few a far between for the next couple weeks until after the first of the year, though I will continue to post news articles. I am going to try and get ahead on my posts for the coming year so I am not so hard pressed to publish them on time like I am now. I hope this will also increase the quality of the posts as well.

Thank you all for stopping by and reading my posts. Also thank you to all my new email subscribers I have gotten over the past month or so; I have more than doubled my email followers since Thanksgiving!
