DStar Radios and Accessories

Share

Hello everyone and welcome back to Everything Hamradio! Today we are going to talk a little bit more about DStar; things like DStar radios, Repeaters, and other accessories that helps DStar be what it is. First, though, I want to let yall know that I am working diligently to get my podcast ready for launch! I have my first episode recorded to a point that I am satisfied. I think I have recorded my first episode probably half a dozen times. I am going to try and have three episodes recorded at launch. I had originally said that I was going to launch on Jan 12th, but I ran into some complications and wasn’t able to get everything done that I need so I am going to push it back a week to Jan 19th. This works out better anyway, because one of my favorite podcasts that I enjoy listening to, FoTime, will be released on the 12th, so this will put my podcast and FoTime on opposite weeks.

First off, what can you do with DStar? The answer to that question is so vast that it would take 1000 words, so let’s just use a picture instead. Granted, this is just a general overview, but…

What can you do with DStar

Radios

Since what you use to talk on is probably one of the biggest things that amateurs want to know about, let’s just start with them. There are several DStar radios that you can buy. Most of them are Icom radios at the time of this post. There are a couple options that you can use to use other brands of radios, but commercially available radios that you can use straight out of the box are limited to only Icom and I believe that you can buy a software defined radio that does it to, but I’m not sure exactly which one. I have also heard that Kenwood has announced that they will have a DStar radio soon. I don’t know how true it is though. I did a search for it and found some posts from like 2005 and 2007 about a new kenwood radio, but it looked like just a rebranding of an Icom radio. I wasn’t able to find anything more recent about it, so I guess only time will tell.

Software Programs for DStar

  • ircDDB Add On – The ircDDB add-on software connects gateways to the ircDDB network. The ircDDB network exchanges call sign routing information using dedicated IRC servers (Internet Relay Chat). It speeds up roaming between repeaters and modules considerably. It also enables call sign routing with homebrew repeaters. The software is also available for non-Icom gateway solutions. This software will not interfere with normal gateway operations or registration with USRoot Server.
  • D*Chat – d*Chat is a Windows based keyboard to keyboard communication application that uses the D-STAR “DV” data capability. d*Chat is used to enable text-based communication between multiple stations on a simplex frequency or through a repeater.Check out this free and very useful IM chat tool for the Icom D-STAR system. Basic, non-internet dependent software helps in emergency communications. See it here in action
  • D-RATS – D-RATS is a small application designed to provide data communication capabilities with D-STAR radios. It supports text chatting, file transfers, position reporting and mapping, and much more!
  • DStarQuery – (Note: Link is to download only. Documentation for this application is provided on a PDF file in the download) DStarQuery works in tandem with javAPRSSrvr or D-PRS Interface to monitor the D-STAR serial data port (or USB port for the ID-1) for commands/queries from remote stations. Upon receiving a recognized command/query, DStarQuery will run the associated application and return whatever is the “printed” by the application.

DStar Hardware

  • µSmartDigi™  D-Gate™ D-Star Gateway – A compact, portable TNC designed to gateway position packets between a D_Star digital network and a conventional analog APRS network via a D-Star radio and a conventional radio.
  • D-Star LED TX/RX Modification – The N5EBW LED Repeater Modification is a drop in replacement to the RP2000V, RP4000V, RP2D, or RP2V to give you transmit and receive lights on the front of these modules. This is a great tool to aid in troubleshooting and diagnosing problems with your repeater system!
  • DV-Dongle – When a DV Dongle is connected to a PC or Mac and used with DVTool software, an amateur radio operator can connect to the international D-Star gateway network and receive/transmit just like a D-Star radio user. You Can buy one from Amazon here
  • Maryland DStar DVLAP and Image for Raspberry Pi – Check out this website for information on how to setup a DStar hotspot using a Raspberry Pi. You can even purchase everything you need to build one of your very own.

Youtube Videos

Washington County, Oregon ARES team talking about how DStar can be used in emcomm.

There are tons of videos that have been made about DStar on Youtube!

Conclusion

There is so much stuff that can be done with DStar that it is hard to cover everything, especially when I am just learning about it myself. If DStar sounds like something you would be interested in, check with your local clubs in your area and see if there is anyone that could be an elmer to you. If not, like I said above, there are tons of videos on Youtube about DStar as well as websites that talk about it. I will be talking about it a little more in episode 1 of my podcast that I will be launching on January 19, 2016, baring no unforseen circumstances.
