In this episode I have a guest co-host joining me. You might remember him from episode 67 where we talked about PSK31 and episode 71 where we talked about Field Day. His name is Ian Kahn, KM4IK. I have enjoyed talking with Ian on those two episodes and asked him to join me for this one.
We talk about some major things that are happening or have happened recently. We start off talking about the amazing devastation that is going on right now here in Texas, Hurricane Harvey.
- Texas Flood Zone ARES Volunteers Advised to Stay Home, Family Safety Comes First
- Cell Networks Suffer Outages in Harvey’s Wake
- Hurricane Watch Net Suspends Operations for Hurricane Harvey
- Amateur Radio Preparations Continue for Category 4 Hurricane Harvey; Flooding Most Significant Fear
- Array of Amateur Radio Resources Readying for Hurricane Harvey Response
The Great American Solar Eclipse
We also talked about the most talked about topic of of last week, The “Great American Solar Eclipse of 2017”!!
Old Technology Coming Back
It’s funny how there are cycles in a lot of things that we do. Clothing styles come back in style, decorating styles come back and it seems that communications methods do as well. You would think that new technology would be better than older technology, but that is not always the case.
- Cyber threats prompt return of radio for ship navigation
- Back to the future? Navy tests computerized Morse Code system
- Ham Radio Operators Train National Guardsmen on the Communications Tool
We wrapped up the episode with an event that is coming up on November 11, 2017 in Alpharetta, GA called HamJam! HamJam is presented by the North Fulton Amateur Radio League and endorse by numerous clubs in the area. This is its 9th year and all the net proceeds go towards helping the youth in the hobby.
