Noise floor report does not inspire confidence

By Dan Romanchik, KB6NU Last June, the FCC’s Technical Advisory Committee asked licensed and unlicensed users of the electromagnetic spectrum to answer some questions about the noise they were experiencing and whether or not it was affecting their services. Specifically, they asked:  * Is there a noise floor problem?  * Where does the problem exist? Spectrally? Spatially? Temporally?  * Is there quantitative evidence of the overall increase in the total integrated noise floor across various segments of the radio frequency spectrum?  * How should a noise study be performed? Well,…

I’m EXTRA Ignorant

Guest Post By Dan Romanchik, KB6NU On Sunday, I received the following e-mail from a reader: “Just wanted to let you know I passed the General exam using your study guide.  It was very helpful.  I am now generally ignorant whereas before I was only technically ignorant.  Ha!” My reply to him was: “Well, if you’re generally  ignorant, I guess that makes me EXTRA ignorant!” This isn’t just a joke–being ignorant is part of the hobby. Amateur radio operators will always be ignorant about something or other. Even if you…

Why You Should Get Your Extra Class License

By Dan Romanchik, KB6NU The Amateur Extra Class license is the highest class of license in the United States, and perhaps the world. Many hams—even hams that live outside the U.S.—aspire to pass the test and be awarded one. There wasn’t always an Amateur Extra Class license. The Extra class license, as we know it today, was created as part of the 1951 license restructuring, that also created the Novice and Technician Class licenses. (In 1951, the Novice license was the “beginner’s license.” To get a Technician Class license, you…

Tweeks and Plans

Hello everybody and welcome back to Everything Ham Radio! In my last post, I talked about some of the things that I have been thinking about. As I hope that all of yall know by now, I launched a podcast about 3 weeks ago and it has been going really good. I am really enjoying doing it. One of the things that I have noticed though is that it is getting harder and harder to push myself to write a blog post over doing a podcast episode. I said in…

Status Update for Everything Hamradio

Hello everybody and welcome back to Everything Hamradio. About a month ago, I sat down one day and really dove into my plans for this year. I made my article schedule for the first quarter of 2016, and I vowed to start a podcast. I thought, “I can post two posts a week on my blog and then publish a podcast every other week.” So I dove into planning, and got everything planned out, or so I thought. There was a couple of articles that I had planned that were…
