Hello everybody and welcome back to the Everything Ham Radio Podcast! In this episode we are joined by Ian Kahn, KM4IK, as a guest host. We talk about Christmas, or more specifically ideas for a Shout Out to Eric Harrison. Eric sent me an email this past weekend tell me that he passed his Technician Class Test. In his email he wrote, “Thanks for making the podcast. Between it and the No Nonsense study guide, I’m Convinced that’s what made it possible.” Also I want to give a shout out…

Ham’s Answer The Call in Record Time!

The amateur radio community is one of the best communities I have ever been involved with! It ranks up there with the fire and law enforcement brotherhood that I have been in for the past 12+ years. Most of the ham radio community is the type of people that will donate their time to help others in need, whether it is another ham or another person in general! Often times, even when they are offered money to pay for their time, they refuse. It is like when I needed help…

The National Simulated Emergency Test is Approaching Fast

Are you involved in ARES or RACES? Does your local group do a simulated emergency test (SET)? If they do, the national SET is coming up in October on the 7th and 8th. This is the perfect time for your local group to set up an emergency drill. Why should you drill? Anytime you have a large group of people in multiple agencies it is a good idea to get together at least once a year so that you know and they know what each other can do. In my…

ARRL Finally Realizes Status Quo Isn’t Going To Cut It

An item in the July 2017 ARRL board meeting caught my attention. It notes that a committee of staff members was tasked with identifying the challenges facing ARRL and possible solutions. Specifically, the committee addressed market research findings that have continued to reveal that only a small percentage of…

A New License Class, Really?!

Do we really need a new license class? I am mean really! We use to have one: remember the Novice, Tech +, and Advanced class licenses? We got rid of those to help simplify things, now there is talks about adding a new one lower than Technician. My other question is, where did this idea come from in the first place. It is not that hard to pass a technician test! It is 25 questions that are relatively easy, all it takes is a little studying. Do they want it…

Why Should I Get My Ham Radio License?

I recently read a reddit post about a gentleman that was having a hard time thinking of why he should get his ham radio license. He stated that he had heard about just the talking aspect of it, but he couldn't “justify” doing the studying for the license and buying the radios just for talking and was asking what else the hobby had to offer. On one hand, I have to think to myself, If you have to talk yourself into getting a ham license or justify spending was is…
