Happy New Year!!

Hello everybody and welcome back to Everything Hamradio! I hope that everyone had an awesome Christmas and a Happy New Year! We had our Christmas on the 23rd, since I had to work on Christmas eve and day. We had a bunch of presents and four kids, my wife’s parents and my wife and I. We had a great breakfast followed by everyone opening presents. After all the presents were open and all the wrapping paper cleaned up, the kids played with all their new toys and the adults did adult things, including me having to go to the bank because someone somehow got a hold of my debit card number and charged over $100 to my account. Wasn’t exactly the way I wanted to spend my “Christmas” but at least it happened then instead of on actual Christmas when the banks were closed for the weekend.

Plans for 2016

I have been writing this blog now for about a year and a half and as I learn different things, I try and implement them. The one thing that I learned a while back, but haven’t really implemented yet is some kind of organization on my end. Yes, I have been pretty normal when it comes to when I post things, but normally it is the day the post is suppose to go live that I am actually writing it. Also, with the exception of my Technician Class License Series that finished about the middle of December, I didn’t really have any idea what I was going to be writing about until the day that I sat down to write the post.

This year is going to be different!

As I write this post, on 12/28/2015, I have my post schedule laid out for the first three months of 2016! At least this will give me an idea as to what I am writing about before I have to actually publish the post. I’m am hoping that I can get a few of them wrote before the first of the year and try and stay a couple weeks ahead on blog posts, that way if, for some reason, I am not able to write a post, at least I have a little bit of cushion and a post will go out on time.

I had planned on taking this Christmas break to get ahead on posts. I even had two and a half days at work where it was just me and it was relatively quiet where I could work on posts. Did I do it though, No! I admit that I slacked off last week and played games pretty much all week. I worked on a couple things for my blog, just not as much as I would have liked to.

Everything Hamradio Podcast

One of the things that I did manage to work on was figuring out just what I needed to get my podcast off the ground. I watched a lot of help videos, listened to some podcasts and read quite a few blog posts on what I needed and how to do things. I wanted to go all out with this, but decided to start on the conservative side and work up from there. When I started this blog, I wanted to do as much of it by itself as I could. Extra money doesn’t come to easily in a 4 kid household, so pretty much everything that I have bought on my blog has been done with things like birthday presents, or Christmas presents or something like that.

The bad part about this approach is that it has been slow going. For the first six months or so of my blog, I had it hosted on my ham club website that I manage. The problem with that was that once I started to get some decent traffic going to my site, my site shut down because of traffic limitations. With the way that it was hosted, I was limited to 250 meg a day transfer and at the time I was sharing my posts with about 15 different ham radio facebook groups, so I would kill my site pretty much every day for the last 6 or so hours of the day.

One of the few purchases that I made where I used house money, was for a new website host. I did manage to get a great deal with IPage and was able to buy 3 years worth of hosting for $1.99 a month or about $80 total. So I got my page moved over without much problem and my traffic continued to grow.

So what does all this have to do with a podcast? Well, this year for Christmas I managed to get about $100 and I purchased a good headset to use on my podcast. I have a headset, but it uses the basic Mic/head phones jacks and the recording quality isn’t all that great. I actually just got a an email while I was writing this post that my new headset shipped and should be delivered tomorrow, so come Thursday when I get back work it should be there waiting on me, so maybe I can get my first episode recorded before I get busy or someone else gets there.

So now I have my new headset, I have the topics for my first few episodes topics picked out, now I just have to get the episodes laid out and researched a little. Once the ground work is laid, need to get the first three recorded, then I will get my host setup and launch. I have set a tentative launch date for January  12, 2016. My current plans are to have an episode on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month or every other week, I haven’t decided yet.

So What Does The Future Hold?

As I was planning out the topics for the next few months, a common theme came to light and I just kind of ran with it and ended up with a full schedule for the next three months covering all different parts of the digital end of amateur radio. We start off talking about digital voice modes, like DStar, Yaesu System Fusion and other things, then move on to different aspect of digital radio like APRS, RTTY and those types of things.

I’m thinking that I am going to try and do things like a quarterly general topic but I’m not entirely sure yet. I do know that I am going to be trying to tie my podcast episodes in with my blog posts either as a precursor to them and having the posts go into more detail, or as a kind of wrap up to the blog posts. I guess only time will tell.

I am also planning on launching a General Class online course. It is going to be more of a course rather than a series like I did with the Technician Class last year. If I get done with it when I am hoping to, Ill start on an Extra Class course as well. Then probably come back and do the Technician class. I have a few other ideas on some courses that I would like to do, but those are going to have to wait til after I get these three courses done I think.

In Conclusion

I guess that is about all that I have planned so far for the coming year. I’m sure more will come up as I continue through the planning of the coming year. I am hoping to plan out my entire year this year but we will have to wait and see.

I invite you to join me this year by subscribing to my blog via email if you haven’t done so already. There is going to be a lot of information going out this year and I wouldn’t want any of yall to miss any. Also, please Like my Facebook page and follow me on Twitter. I am also on Google+, LinkedIn and StumbledUpon but I don’t check those very often. Links to all my social media pages can be found on the menu at the top of the page under Social.

EDIT: I wrote this article a couple days ago and as you read I got the notification that my new headset had shipped for my upcoming podcast release. Well, I got it today and plugged it in and I am getting a very bad hum in the recordings. I think it has something to do with Windows 10. I plugged it into a WinXP and Win 7 machine and it worked fine. I might also be my laptop fan bleeding into it. I did some playing around with my recording software and was able to filter the hum out for the most part, so I think we are going to run with it!
